Philly Cheese Steaks

Today, I had a shitty day.  Sorry to be so blunt but that’s the only way I can really put it.  I worked from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM, and then drove through rush hour traffic to my other job where I proceeded in working 5:15 until 10:00 PM.  The only thing that got me through this day from hell was the pound of paper thin sliced rib eye waiting for me in my refrigerator.  The plan for this?  Philly cheese steaks.

I had never made these heavenly sandwiches myself before, but tonight was the night.  I got together the steak, some cheeze-wiz, and hoagie rolls.  Nothing special here.

Oh, Samuel Adams came to the party too.  Don’t worry, he was invited.  The butcher at Hiller’s by me was nice enough to cut up the pound of rib eye in perfect slices.  This makes me want to buy a meat slicer for home.  This was the perfect opportunity to use my new gas stove on my new cast iron skillet.  I’ve had this baby for a few months now, and for some reason hadn’t busted it out for any delicious meals.  What better meal than Philly cheese steaks?  A little bit of salt and pepper and you’re good to go.  These things were incredible.

By the way, hot sauce is an excellent addition to Philly cheese steaks.  Oooooooooooooooooooh man.

CHEEZ WHIZ IN A JAR????

John August 5, 2009 at 8:43 pm

Yes, the jar. I usually like the squeeze tube kind but my options were limited!

Hahahahhaha, look at Varta coming in and layin’ the smack down! I’m gonna do the same…..not “wit” onions?!? That’s no Philly (what would I know…I’m just a Cali boy). I want to try Gino’s, Tony Luc’s and Pat’s SO bad! Ever had ‘em?

Erin Brooks August 6, 2009 at 4:33 am

Cheese wiz? I like real cheese. :P But it does look really good though :D

varta August 6, 2009 at 7:22 am

No no no no, not a smack down at ALL. I’ve never seen it in a jar before! I though it only came in a can. My junk food world just got thrown through a loop here. Bananas.

Cheeze Whiz is essential for Philly cheese steaks!

Everywhere carries the jars around here. I’m sure they’re somewhere around you!

Sorry to hear about your bad day, but I just had to point out (as a philly native) that unless those rolls are hard on the outside (and it doesn’t look like they are) you can’t quite classify them as hoagie rolls.

Otherwise, not bad :)

Man those look good! I could use one right now.

Cheez-Whiz? NNNOOO! No onions? NNNOOOO! You might as well gone to Arbys for a Beef N Cheddar dude. Oh well, to each his own. :)
I am definitely in the camp that a Philly is beef, provolone/white american, and ONIONS on a hoagie bun. I love making these at home. One time, I forgot the hoagie buns, and used white bread. Glad I made that mistake. It was basically a grilled cheese w/beef and onions. And it was DELICIOUS.
Still, those pics are making me hungry.

Not sure why I didn’t go with onions or peppers. Next time I’ll hook it up.

You should have thrown onions, peppers, and mushrooms in there and that would’ve been an everlasting delight. As for the original places in Philly, I tried Jim’s steaks back in March and that was absolutely worth every bite. I heard Gino’s sucks and the dudes there are pricks but Pat’s has an awesome atmosphere and cool people, not to mention some excellent phillies. Man, I gotta go back there…

@ Erin, although real cheese tastes good on them, a philly just isn’t the same without cheese whiz =D.

what’s the ingredient of the cheese sauce? I am living in Italy and I want to do that sauce by myself, could you please tell me the ingredient?
