Beezy’s – Ypsilanti, MI

by John on August 11, 2010 · 4 comments

A lot of people refer to their Mothers as angels, which is to be expected.  Carrying you around for 9 months and being responsible for you being here certainly deserves some sort of endearing term.  The difference between these people and me is my Mother actually is an angel.  I’m not saying that in one of those “I have the best Mom ever” kind of ways.  I really do have the best Mom ever.  I’m sorry if you disagree, but I am a little biased.

One of my Mother’s favorite spots in Ypsilanti is Beezy’s.  She stumbled upon it a year ago and went there every day of the following week.  She hasn’t been back too frequently because my Father and her are big fans of the Lean Cuisines, so when my dad had a late appointment I suggested we head over to get some soup and sandwiches.  She immediately agreed.

Bee Mayhew opened Beezy’s in November of 2008 after managing the Roadshow outside of Zingerman’s Roadhouse.  It sits in downtown Ypsilanti on the same block as a dentist office, a puppet theater, an angry and confused Pentecostal musician, a strip club, a tattoo parlor, and a college piano bar.  The location was home to a cafe previously, but this is hardly the area you would expect to find a gem such as this.

The sign outside advertises “Simple, Honest, Food” and that’s exactly what you’ll get.  Breakfast is served in the morning, which is the cafe’s speciality, while sandwiches, soups, and salads are served for the remainder of the day.  There is also a full coffee and espresso bar.

The sandwiches are nicely sized and served on hearty sourdough, rye  or cracked wheat or veggie.  They range from a simple deli sandwich to a BBQ bacon chicken salad sandwich.  Every sandwich is simple and fresh, yet comes with an interesting twist.  The soups are made daily from scratch and are my favorite thing on the menu.  You can refill your bowl for only two dollars which is incredibly tempting for someone like me who could eat soup for every meal.   The salads, like the sandwiches, are simple and fresh but still have that twist that make them unique to Beezy’s.  Nothing on the menu will cost you more than seven dollars and you can eat comfortably for ten.

Their menu is available on their website.  It’s a good read.

On this particular trip, I went with my usual soup and sandwich combination, which will run you only $6.95. The soup of the day was a Chicken Chowder and was honestly one of the best bowls of soup I’ve ever had.  I’ve noticed a trend where every time I have a bowl of soup at Beezy’s it becomes my new favorite. Notice how I have perfected the art of filling my bowl with the most soup it can possibly fit.  Yes, they allow you to fill your own bowl which allows for maximal soup consumption.

Beezy's Chicken Chowder

The BBQ Bacon Chicken Salad Sandwich, with roasted Amish chicken dressed in barbecue sauce, red onions, black pepper, and chopped applewood bacon was too tempting for me to pass up.  It’s an interesting sandwich because the listed ingredients would presumably create a rich, hearty sandwich, but Beezy’s serves you a light, fresh tasting sandwich with the barbecue sauce giving the chicken salad a bit of a twang.  It’s a delicious sandwich that won’t leave you feeling like you just ate what you think you originally ordered.

BBQ Bacon Chicken Salad Sandwich

My Mother ordered the Chicksilanti Salad Sandwich, which is that same roasted Amish chicken mixed with tarragon, celery, onion and mayo.  It has the same fresh taste as the BBQ Bacon Chicken Salad Sandwich but lacks that tangy taste.  When I say it lacks the tangy taste, I do not mean to discredit the sandwich.  It is equally as delicious.

Chicksilanti Salad Sandwich

Instead of ordering a bowl of soup she opted to go with Beezy’s Salad which is one hell of a salad, even to someone like myself who does not eat a salad more than once every six months.  Beezy’s Salad is mixed greens tossed with pesto ranch dressing, carrots, radish, and croutons then topped with chopped bacon, muenster cheese, sliced avocado, cherry tomato, red onion, sliced chicken breast and egg salad.  It’s incredible that a salad that costs less than $6.00 features this many ingredients.  This type of preparation would normally run you close to $10.00 at any other establishment.

Beezy's Salad

Beezy’s is a welcomed addition to the Ypsilanti area that is already home to many “family owned” dining establishments. Years ago, you would expect to find a place like this in the downtown Ann Arbor area whose new dining options to be somewhat dominated by chain restaurants such as Potbelly’s Sandwich Works and Chipotle.  The cafe seems to be thriving which is great news to my Mother and me.  As long as they are serving their simple, honest food, we will be frequent customers.

Summer Beer Festival is over and before I comment on my favorites I would like to point out the awesomeness that is Ypsilanti.  Thousands upon thousands of beer drinkers, many of whom were inebriated (myself included), and the crowd was amazing.  Everyone was friendly and why not, we were drinking incredible beer.  Rain and swamp-like conditions be damned, it was one of those happy to be alive moments.

I tasted so many beers that before I announce my favorite here are the honorable mentions:

Copper Canyon Ginger Kids Revenge Imperial Red

Frog Island Bengal IPA

Big Buck Lemon Summer Ale

Dark Horse Crooked Tree IPA

Founders Black Biscuit

However, my award for beer of the Festival goes to:

Dragonmead Redwing Raspberry Wheat – Perfect for a warm summer evening, hint of raspberry that really comes alive with the finish.  For me to pick anything with the words “Red” and “Wing” in it is amazing in and of itself, as I am certainly NOT a fan of the local hockey team. However, even with that handicap Dragonmead’s Raspberry wins.  Also, Dragonmead is a really bad-ass name.

Special award for Most Interesting Beer goes to our friends at Bastone Brewery for their Peanut Butter Ale.  Refreshing and delicious.  Seriously.

The best tent and overall brewer award goes to Gaylord, MI’s own Big Buck Brewery.  Their Lemon Summer Ale was a revelation, damn near a winner overall.  Also, they made an ice cream stout that was unbelievably delicious.

Kudos to the Michigan Brewers Guild for a fine event.  Let it be known to all that Michigan is the United States capital for microbrews, so says Epic Portions.  I’ll put our group up against any other state.

Good night and good luck.

In this area, most people head to Ann Arbor for their dining choices.  Some people like to stick around Ypsilanti and visit Sidetrack or Aubree’s.  I can’t argue with any of these choices, but when it comes to really good local joints you just can’t beat a trip down Michigan Ave.  Sure, you may feel like you’re in a bit of an odd(for some people, scary) area on your way there but once you reach Gabriel’s Hoagies, Roy’s Squeeze-Inn or Los Amigos you’ll feel like you’re in food heaven.  These are some of the few businesses on this strip that remain from the 1950′s and before, and are offering not only great food, but an experience that you just can’t find many other places.

Bill's Drive-In - Ypsilanti, MI

Right across the street from Gabriel’s and Roy’s sits Bill’s Drive-In, which like both places, has fed locals for 50+ years(since 1935, to be exact).  The building looks like a tiny mustard colored house surrounded by a parking lot,  but two windows at the front and crooked signage indicating hot dogs and root beer let you know that this little house is actually a hot dog stand.  Pull in, but don’t get out of your car.  An attendant will be at your car within one minute and they do not serve customers at the front window.

There are no menus at Bill’s.  If you’re not sure what you want, the attendant will quickly tell you what they offer.  Hot dogs with or without chili, topped with your choice of onions, cheese, or mustard.  Loose burgers are also offered. There is homemade root beer to drink, and potato chips if you need a side.  If that’s not simple enough for you then I think you may have some sort of problem.  If you need something else other than that, I just don’t think Bill’s isn’t for you.  This isn’t Pink’s or any kind of fancy Hollywood hot dog stand.  They don’t need any other items.  Their menu is perfect.

Order a dog or two with chili and a large root beer.  It will only cost you about $3.00.  Open the paper wrap and you’ll find a steamed white bun that is shorter than the hot dog.   The hot dog is cooked by boiling and kept warm by steam. The dogs are naturally cased and while they don’t have as much snap as I would normally like, the flavor makes it completely OK.  The chili is very unique.  Not quite Coney chili, but not like.. Well, it’s hard to explain.  It’s definitely tomato rich and a little spicier than most Coney chili.  They have gotten the chili to hot dog ratio perfect and the ratio is consistent on every order.  The dog is topped with plenty of chili, but just not enough to spill all over your lap while eating it in your car.

The hot dogs and chili are delicious, but the real star of Bill’s Drive-In is the root beer.  Believe me when I tell you that this is the best root beer you will ever had.  I have traveled thousands of miles on a quest to find the worlds’ best root beer.  I haven’t really, but I’ve tried a lot of root beer in my life and this is by far the best.  There’s not even a close second.  The root beer is rich, creamy, a little syrupy, with a nice bite to the finish.  It’s the definition of legit.  You just can’t get root beet like this anywhere else, especially in a bottle or can.  Next time you visit, ask to take a gallon home with you. It comes in a simple milk jug and will be gone in 24 hours.  You’ll thank me later.

Bill’s is another example of the great good that exists in this area if you look for it.  It’s not exactly a hidden gem, but most people would have to venture out farther than they usually go for a meal to find it.  Do some research and you will find places, such as Bill’s, which offers so much more appeal and history than simply going to a chain restaurant and eating something that has little thought and process behind it.

Mission Accomplished.

After many months of attempting to persuade the city of Ypsilanti to rid itself of of Tios Mexican Cafe, it was brought to my attention this morning that I have won the first battle in my defense of Mexican cuisine.  Tios’ Ypsilanti location is now closed for business

I say this is simply a victory in battle, rather than a war, because there is still a Tios location open in Ann Arbor and while the seats stay primarily empty, it has managed to stay afloat.  Tios must be stopped.

If you have forgotten why we fight this bloody but important war, I urge you to review the Tios Battle Archives and renew your hatred for their attempted destruction of authentic Mexican cuisine.

Thank you, residents of Ypsilanti, for resisting their signs advertising a “World Famous Wet Burrito”, “Best Mexican Food in Ypsilanti”, and other propaganda aimed at destroying Mexican food in our community.  This city is host to many great Mexican restaurants, and I urge you to give them a try.

I now give you Tios on fire.  I love this picture.

Pacific Beach Burritos – Ypsilanti, MI

February 15, 2010

About a year ago, the old A&W location on Washtenaw that had been vacant for years had a sign out front advertising that a burrito joint called Pacific Beach Burritos would soon move in.  This caught my eye because I am a burrito fanatic.  They’re like beauty wrapped in a ...

Gabriel’s Hoagies – Ypsilanti, MI

February 10, 2010

Ahhh, the cheese steak hoagie.   Quite possibly the perfect sandwich.  Thinly sliced steak surrounded by a long hoagie roll and covered in peppers, onions, mushrooms, and of course cheese.  It makes my eyes water just thinking about it.  Since I don’t live in Philadelphia, it always has seemed like I ...
