  • Volcano Nachos – Taco Bell

For some reason today I felt the need the try Taco Bell’s new Volcano Nachos (edit: i have since been reminded that Stephanie told me to get these.  i apologize.). Volcano sauce will always have a special place in my heart because, well.. I got to meet the people who developed it. I had heard that they were planning on expanding the menu and assumed nachos would be the next step. What’s easier than taking a menu item that already and exists and dumping sauce on it? Personally, I would have gone with my Volcano quesadilla, but I can understand why Taco Bell would want to save such a delicious creation for later usage.  I still believe that quesadillas are the Arizona Cardinals of the Taco Bell menu.  Underrated.

As for the Volcano Nachos, I have to say they were pretty bleh.  I think they went a little too far with these guys.  Just a bit too much going on here.  On top of the regular tortilla chips(no red coloring here), you get beef, beans, cheese, red tortilla strips, volcano sauce, cheese, jalapenos and sour cream.  That’s a whole lot of shit for some nachos.  The first thing that concerned me is why they decided to put tortilla strips on top of tortilla chips?  Seemed pretty useless to me.  Also, why is there Volcano sauce and nacho cheese?  The whole creation lost me a little bit.  It was also difficult to eat because of all the crap piled on.  Normally,  I am a huge fan of different foods piled on top of each other, but this was an exception.

I’m usually a pretty big fan of new Taco Bell menu items.  They frequently do admiral job of mixing things up to offer fresh product.  I have to say that they failed miserably this time.  These nachos will cost you $3.79, but it probably makes more sense to everyone to simply order the Nachos Bel Grande for $2.59 and add Volcano Sauce for an extra $.30.  This gets you the same exact thing without tortilla strips or jalapenos for a almost a buck cheaper.  It’s a similar deal to the Volcano burrito, which you can get for $1.50 cheaper if you simply order a cheesy double beef burrito with Volcano sauce.

This isn’t a “shame on you” to Taco Bell, but it is a promise that I will never order these again.  Thankfully, this particular meal was saved by an old favorite — Pintos & Cheese, or as I like to call it.. Bowl o’ Slop.

  • Anthony Bourdain on Sandra Lee

I love Anthony Bourdain.  I’ve read all of his books, watch No Reservations religiously, and subscribe to the majority of his culinary opinions and ideals.  I am an Anthony Bourdain slappy.  If I was a house wife, Rachel Ray would be my Anthony Bourdain.  His blog is always a source of hilarity and sarcastic viewpoints.  His most recent entry documents a run in he had with Sandra Lee at the Julia & Julia premier.  Read on.

” Thing about a shark, he’s got lifeless eyes…black eyes…like a doll’s eyes. When he comes at you, doesn’t seem to be livin’ ..until he bites you–and those black eyes roll over white, and then you hear that terrible high pitched screamin’…the ocean turns red…”

-Robert Shaw (as Quint) in Jaws

So, I get invited to a movie premier. This doesn’t happen a lot and it’s for Julie/Julia, and I happen to be very sentimental on the subject of Julia Child . The book “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” has a sort of totemic place in my personal history–as it does, I’m sure, for millions of others. I am also a big Stanley Tucci fan. He directed and co-starred in the single best live action film on the restaurant business (Big Night) and there was certainly no reason to believe that Meryl Streep couldn’t “do” Julia. ( Of course she can.) But that’s not the point of this tale. The next morning, I’m still trying to reconstruct the exact progression, the details, like trying to remember the license plate of the truck that hit me. Only this wasn’t any normal truck. This was far more terrifying and traumatic an event than being smashed by the grill of a Peterbilt, pulled up into the wheel well, dragged for a while, only to have my shredded remnants left by the side of the road, wondering, in my last moments of consciousness, “What the hell happened?” I’m pretty sure, judging by the vestigial ectoplasm on my jacket that I was sideswiped by pure evil.

I’m standing there by the boeuf bourgignonne station, sucking down martinis with my wife (they drink a LOT of martinis in the movie), minding my own business, having an innocent chat with some friends, when I notice someone has their hand on me. An icy, tendril of fear runs down my spine. I turn and find myself looking straight into the deceptively attractive and reasonable looking face of Sandra Lee.  To make matters worse–and more…..uncomfortable, she’s standing next to her boyfriend, Andrew Cuomo, the Attorney General of the State of New York.

Now, I’ve said some unkind things over the years about Sandra. Far too many and far too terrible things to ever apologize for. Plus, I pretty much meant every word. Once you’ve seen Sandra making Kwanzaa Cake on YouTube, there’s no backing down . My head is reeling with the thought that one phone call from Cuomo and my last twenty years of tax returns are getting audited . I’m paralyzed, wondering what the statute of limitations is on various things I may or may not have done twenty years ago. Sandra is talking. I know this cause her lips are moving and she’s saying–overtly anyway, nice things. Like “You’re a very naughty man,” and she’s chatting amiably with my wife. But one hand is picking over me like the meat buyer at Peter Luger selecting a rib section–like some demonic bird of prey is poking and prodding, deciding where the weakest, most tender point of entry is, giving, as I recall, a point by point review of her investigations to my wife–who ordinarily, I have to say, would have been across the table with a tomahawk chop elbow to the top of the skull by now, but who, like me, sits mesmerized and grinning insanely, frozen by the ..bizarrenessof the moment which seems to go on forever as Sandra’s hand wanders upward, tugs an ear lobe and asks if my ears are red yet. (They were.) Having had her way with me, she leaves the emptied husk of my carcass teetering at the table and moves on.

I felt like the victim of a drive-by shooting. “What just..happened?” I said with a weak, trembly voice. I looked around to see if anyone else had noticed the quiet but very thorough disembowelment that had just occurred. Nothing. It had looked, to anyone who’d care to notice, like any other cocktail party conversation–but I knew better. I had looked into those eyes. I’d seen. Oh, she was smiling all right, but I’m pretty damn sure you could have dragged a rusty butterknife across my carotid artery right there at the table and her expression would not have changed, maybe only the eyes, they’d roll over white as I geysered onto the chafing dishes.

As we say on the show all the time, “What have we learned today?”

I learned that were a nuclear weapon to fall on New York, I’m pretty sure that if no one else, Sandra Lee would survive to clamber out of the rubble. That if it came down to a fight over the last can of food, she would surely emerge the victor.

I learned that I am truly and deeply afraid of her. And I’m pretty sure she’s a Democrat.

  • Food Network = MommyTV

After getting off of work last night I made the mistake of watching the final few episodes of The Next Food Network Star, including the finale.  I have to admit that I watched the entire fourth season and have always wondered why they haven’t canceled this show.  Guy Fieri turned out to be a marketable personality, but has the show produced anything else worth while?  Season one produced Party Line with the Hardy Boys, which was promptly canceled.   Season three produced The Gourmet Next Door, which lasted 6 episodes because Amy Finley thought cooking in front of a camera was way too stressful.  Season 4 produced Big Daddy, which was ripped in detail only a few days ago.  So this leads us to season 5, where the Food Network decided to punch the idea of trying something new directly in it’s big dumb face.

The decision came down to Jeffrey Saad, a graduate of California Culinary Academy with more than 25 years experience as a restaurateur, food consultant and chef, or Melissa D’Arabian, a stay at home Mom with no formal culinary training or professional experience.  I can totally see why this was a difficult decision that required the assistance of some of the greatest chefs in the world.  Did I mention that Jeffrey was described by one of the contestants as a Greek god, holds a second degree black belt in martial arts, loves freedom, and volunteers at a homeless shelter on Tuesdays and Thursdays(can’t confirm this).  Oh, and Melissa drives a mini van, has 4 kids, a great smile, and was the best at covering up her lack of culinary knowledge.  Once again, I can see why this was such a difficult decision.  Maybe Guy Fieri chose the winner..

I guess I just don’t see the draw of another amateur cook who appeals to stay at home Moms.  I could actually relate to Jeffrey’s passion for food.   His ideas and ingredients were something I would give a chance.  I like to tune in to the Food Network to have a chef teach me something that I did not know before.  I considered my frequent viewings in the past to be learning experiences.  I loved watching Mario Batali because it’s obvious that the man knows more about food than I could ever dream of.  I enjoyed Emeril because he could teach you about cooking while making you laugh your ass off.  It was all about credibility.  Mario has now been banished to the Fine Living Network, while it seems that all the Emeril you see now are re-runs.  Replacing them now are personalities like Sunny Anderson, whos previous experience includes a stint as Food & Lifestyle Editor for Hip Hop Weekly magazine.

I will always enjoy the Food Network because they always will talk about my favorite subject, but this is getting a little ridiculous.  Thankfully, I can still watch Alton Brown who by some miracle has been able to make it through this transition to Mommy Cooks TV.  If you are interested, Melissa’s show will premier next Sunday and focus on feeding families of four for under 10 dollars.  I can’t wait.
