  • Finally, a Sonic Within Driving Distance

    sonic

Finally, I can actually visit a Sonic rather than see the stupid commercials on TV and cry about only having a McDonalds, Taco Bell and Burger King.  This may not be huge news, but it’s huge news.  God, that makes no sense.  I’m a little excited over here.   I feel like going to 7-11 and weezing the juice.

    From HometownLife.com..

It was a grand slam (HAHA, get it???) for Westland, MI last Friday as the long-closed former Denny’s Restaurant on Cowan and Wayne Road was demolished.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to see it demolished for new development,” said Lori Fodale, economic development director. “It was amazing to see all the people watching and taking pictures. The community is excited to see the building go.”

A new Sonic restaurant will replace the former Denny’s which had been closed for a number of years and had become an eyesore on a busy corner near Westland Shopping Center.

John Matar of Westland Sonic is developing the new restaurant and also will be involved in the operation. He expected the site to be cleared of debris by as early as Saturday. The new restaurant should be ready to open in 60 days, he said.

This will be the second Sonic to be opened by Matar — the first is in Southgate — and he has plans for future restaurants in Monroe and Livonia. Matar has the rights to open Sonic locations in Wayne County.

Sonic features car hops for drive-in service, outdoor patio seating and a drive-through window but has no indoor seating. The drive-in is under a canopy and year-round will be staffed by servers on roller skates.

“We’re looking forward to the grand opening. We visited the store in Southgate in a blizzard. They keep the parking lot clear,” said Fodale.

  • KFC’s $5 Fill Up Box

You are now free to call me a hypocrite.

A few months back, I wrote a post demanding that certain fast food establishments stop the production of random new items to draw attention to themselves. One of these included the new grilled chicken at KFC, which I believe I called “completely going against everything you served at KFC for the last 50 years.” Well, ever since I began seeing the commercials for their new Five Dollar Fill up Boxes, I have had great admiration for KFC because of their direct rip on Subway’s five dollar footlongs. I have new found respect for the Colonel, even though he’s been dead for years. Dead or alive, anyone who takes a dig at Subway is a friend of mine.

With this new admiration, I decided to pick up one of these boxes on the way home from work last night. If you haven’t seen the commercial which is aired non-stop on what seems like every single channel, the five dollar fill up box comes with a chicken option, a side of your choice, a biscuit, and a medium drink. I was surprised to find that there were several different options, including a two-piece meal, three Original Recipe Strips, a Twister Wrap, five Hot Wings or five Dipped Wings. For some reason, I decided to try the new grilled chicken. You are again free to call me a hypocrite. For my side I, of course, got the mashed taters. I’m just not down with cole slaw from KFC. Here’s what I got:

I was rather disappointed when I opened the box.  I was actually pretty disgusted.  The chicken looked pretty bare and didn’t look like it was going to fill me up at all.  Had KFC abused my new found trust?  Upon putting the pieces on a plate, I realized that the breast was actually a pretty good size hunk of meat. The wing could’ve been a little better, but the appearance of the chicken was much improved from my first glance:

The outside of the chicken was slightly crispy and the chicken had the same greasy texture as the original fried kind.  A paper towel was required to handle it, which is always a great sign.  I am usually a frequent adder of Frank’s Red Hot to most plain chicken I eat, but the grilled chicken didn’t even require any.  The meat was juicy, and the seasoning was tasty.  I wouldn’t call this the finest piece of chicken I’ve ever eaten, but it was a definite surprise.  The Taters?  Delicious as always.  I have to give KFC some props on this.  For 5 bucks, this is one hell of a deal.  I have to say I was satisfied with the size of the meal, and only had fruit snacks after, but that’s only because of my deep love affair with fruit snacks.

I would recommend you go and give one of these boxes a shot.  You may find yourself as surprised as I was.  Oh, and boo Subway.  Nasty.

  • Blog on the Go (History)

A lot of people are concerned with people that talk on their phones and text while driving.  I agree that this is a dangerous thing to do, but I can’t drive without it.  My A.D.D. requires me to be doing at least three things at all times, so I have to be engaged in some form of communication.  Rather than text while driving 50 miles per hour in a vehicle that weighs in excess of 1,000 pounds, I decided the natural thing to do was blog.  Yes, you are witnessing the first food blog done in a moving vehicle.  Settle down.  I know it’s awesome.  Dangerous?  Maybe.  But that’s a risk I am willing to take to entertain my readers.  I would also like to apologize to my Mom.  I’m expecting a phone call within hours telling me how stupid I am.

I decided to stop at Burger King for some breakfast.  Burger King always seems to be second in line when it comes to breakfast, and mostly just copies off what McDonalds has.  I have always enjoyed BK breakfast, but it will never touch the amazing Egg McMuffin.  Also, BK’s food seems to be a little ridiculous on the grease.

Hmm, what will I have?  I chose those new BK wraps, a croissant sandwich, and the new iced Mocha BK Joe.  I wasn’t sure why I chose to get something having to do with coffee because I don’t drink coffee, but I wasn’t too disappointed.

Off I went, with no regards to public safety.  The wrap was easy to eat while driving, and actually tasted pretty delicious.  Inside are potatoes, bacon, cheese, and egg.  Like all of their other breakfast options, the wrap was extremely greasy which I blame on the potatoes.  I would recommend one of these guys if you’re looking for a small and cheap breakfast.  It’s on par with the McDonalds breakfast burrito but a lot simpler.  Check out this damn fine photography while operating a moving vehicle.

Next up we have the delicious croissant sandwich.  I don’t believe I have ever been to Burger King for breakfast and not gotten one of these.  They are the closest thing, in deliciousness, to McDonalds’ McMuffin, which I consider to be king of the fast food breakfast items.  This was a little more tricky to consume in the car.  A napkin bib for my legs was constructed, and eating commenced.

..and finally we have the mocha BK Joe.  Of course Burger King had to follow the coffee trend after McDonalds introduced their “premium” items a year or two ago.  This coffee was not so premium.  It was, on the other hand, very delicious.  After seeing the drive through lady pour it out of a giant pitcher, I was a little worried.  After tasting it, oh  man.  Not disappointed.  It tastes exactly like those Starbucks Frappuccino things that you buy in stores.  Nice work, King.

Just for the record, I’m still in the process of moving and got pretty lazy last night.  That’s my explanation for all of that crap in the back seat.  I’m not that big of a slob.
