Wendy’s New and Improved French Fries

I rarely eat fast food, but last weekend I decided to cheat on my diet and stop at Wendy’s for fries and a frosty.  Salty and sweet.  Not having eaten at Wendy’s in a while, I couldn’t help but notice the fries were devastatingly delicious.  Normally Wendy’s fries are pretty average.  I didn’t think much of it, though, when you’ve been dieting and depriving yourself of calories for a few months EVERYTHING tastes delicious.  Even Bran Flakes…

Lo and behold, I learned the other day that Wendy’s is serving new fries.  I was intrigued as I really was blown away by how good the fries were when I ate them last weekend.  I did notice that the potatoes had the skin on, which is the first step towards delicious homemade fries and mashed potatoes.  Seriously, does anyone peel potatoes anymore?  I leave the skin on when I make potato soup.  But I digress…

I went back to Wendy’s last night to confirm they were delicious and to blow up my diet.  The short answer is…yes.  They are as good as I thought they were.  What is the secret?  According to Wendy’s they are now exclusively using Russet potatoes (what took them so long), leaving the skin on, and seasoning with sea salt.

Seems to me they are simply using a higher quality potato, and it shows.  Good for them.  This EP writer gives them a big, diet-destroying thumbs up.

Seriously, they are fantastic. A vast improvement over their old version. Up until the other day I had never finished an order of Wendy’s fries before. That has changed. I am kind of afraid. First great new bacon, then improved patties, and now this… what will they think of next to devastate my waistline??

I tried them last week. I was very disappointed personally. Wendy’s has never had good fries. These are an improvement, you can tell they are made with higher quality ingredients. The problem is one of two things. The cooking style or they sat out too long. They were not crispy. Both McDonalds and Burger King’s fries have the crispy exterior and the soft interior. With the old fries, and still, with the new fries, they do not have this crispy outer shell, they still are floppy and soft as you bite into them.

Maybe I got a bad batch, but the texture was no different than what I am have become accustom to at Wendy’s.

Personally, I think Wendy’s had the best fries in the fast food market before the change. I know this is a matter of opinion, but to take a great fry and discard it for this new thing was an ignorant move. With these new fries, you can definitely taste the “new” oil they are using, not sure if that was the goal but it certainly was the result!! I think the most discouraging aspect, aside from the horrible taste, is the idea that we will somehow buy this product with the mindless abandon of Lemmings taking the plunge simply because they tell us that by doing so we are being health conscious. I am definitely in favor of enbracing a healthier lifestyle but lets face it, if our health was the mitigating factor of our choice of where we eat, I think the venue would most likely not include fries and a shake.

Don’t get me wrong, Wendy’s is about the only fast food that I truely enjoy. What can I say, I love their burgers and up until recently, I loved their fries. Today, I am disappointed. I do understand the “businss decision” process; less expensive products = more profit. Changing to a vendor that will produce a skin-on French Fry does cost less to produce. So how do they get us to buy their cheaper product? They wrap it in a shiny new package called “Healthy Fast-Food.” This from a company that has most of its patrons dipping their healthy fries (oh, you know you do) into a Frosty!! Whats, next? A “healthier” chocolate Frosty to dip their healthier fries in? Thing seem to have changed since the time of Dave.

Just call it like it is. If you want people to give you their honest opinion of a “new” product, then have them evaluate it on the taste, not on if they feel more responsible eating it. If you are turely worried about your health, maybe avoid fries alltogether. This new change is about their bottom line, not the shape of our bottoms. This is pure “Return on Investment” and marketing strategy.
